7 Things You Should Never Do During a Thunderstorm

A heavy thunderstorm can arrive suddenly, bringing dark clouds, strong winds, loud thunder and flashes of lightning. In many parts of Nigeria, people experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly during the rainy season.

While watching lightning from a distance may seem harmless, certain activities can expose you to serious danger. Here are important precautions to remember whenever a storm begins.

1. Do not stand under a tree
Standing beneath a tall tree during a thunderstorm is dangerous. Lightning can strike trees, and the electrical current may travel through the tree or along the ground. Move into a substantial building or an enclosed vehicle.

2. Avoid open fields
People standing in open spaces can be exposed to lightning. If you are outdoors and cannot reach shelter immediately, move away from isolated tall objects and follow recognised lightning safety guidance.

3. Do not swim or remain in water
Water activities should stop as soon as thunder is heard. Leave swimming pools, rivers, lakes and other exposed water areas and find proper shelter.

4. Avoid using electrical appliances connected to the wall
Lightning can cause power surges that travel through electrical wiring. Avoid using plugged-in appliances during a storm. Unplugging equipment before the storm arrives is safer than attempting to do so while lightning is already nearby.

5. Do not lean against concrete walls unnecessarily
Lightning-related electrical currents can travel through metal components embedded in concrete. Stay away from exterior walls and avoid leaning against concrete structures during a storm.

6. Avoid open windows and balconies
Stay indoors, away from windows, doors and balconies. Strong winds can carry objects that may break glass or cause injuries.

7. Do not assume the danger is over after one flash
Lightning can strike some distance from the area where rain is falling. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning to outdoor activities.

Final thoughts
The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside a substantial enclosed building or a fully enclosed vehicle with a hard roof. If you hear thunder, take shelter immediately rather than waiting for rain to begin. A few precautions can prevent serious injuries.
