Losing a limb or part of the body can be a permanent injury for humans. But in the animal kingdom, some creatures possess an extraordinary ability: they can regenerate certain body parts. Scientists study these animals to understand how their cells repair damaged tissues.
1. Axolotls: Axolotls are famous for regenerating entire limbs. They can also repair parts of their spinal cord, heart and other tissues under certain conditions. Their regenerative abilities make them important subjects in scientific research.
2. Starfish: Many starfish can regrow lost arms. Some species can even develop a new individual from a portion of the body, provided the remaining piece contains the necessary structures.
3. Planarian flatworms: These tiny worms have remarkable regenerative abilities. Some species can rebuild much of their bodies from small fragments because they contain special stem cells.
4. Sea cucumbers: Sea cucumbers can regenerate certain internal organs after losing them. Some species eject internal organs as a defence mechanism and later replace them.
5. Lizards: Many lizards can regrow their tails after dropping them to escape predators. The replacement tail is not always identical to the original, and it may contain different internal structures.
6. Salamanders: Several salamander species can regenerate limbs and other tissues. Their abilities vary, but they are among the best-known vertebrate regenerators.
7. Hydras: Hydras are tiny freshwater animals that can rebuild much of their bodies after being cut or damaged. Their cells continuously renew themselves.
Final thoughts: Regeneration is one of nature’s most fascinating abilities. Scientists hope that studying these animals will reveal more about tissue repair, although humans cannot currently regrow complete limbs in the same way.
