What to Do If You Transfer Money to the Wrong Bank Account in Nigeria

Imagine sending ₦50,000 to someone, only to discover that one digit in the account number was wrong. Or perhaps you selected the wrong beneficiary from your banking app. The first reaction may be panic, especially when the money is needed for rent, school fees or an urgent payment.

However, taking the right steps immediately can improve your chances of resolving the problem.

1. Confirm that the transfer actually went through
Check your transaction history and account balance. Sometimes a transaction may be pending or unsuccessful, even when the app displays a notification. Confirm the transaction status before taking further action.

2. Save the transaction details
Keep the transaction receipt, reference number, date, time, amount and destination account details. Take screenshots if necessary. These details will help your bank identify the payment.

3. Contact your bank immediately
Use the official customer care number, banking app or branch. Explain that you made a transfer to the wrong account and request assistance with a mistaken-transfer complaint. The bank can guide you through its recovery process and contact the receiving institution where appropriate.

4. Do not threaten or harass the recipient
If you know the person who received the money, you may politely explain the mistake and request a refund. However, avoid threats, public accusations or attempts to intimidate the person. Keep records of all communication.

5. Understand that recovery may not be automatic
A mistaken transfer does not always mean the bank can instantly reverse the payment. The receiving bank may need to contact the account holder, and the process may involve verification and applicable banking procedures.

6. Escalate if your complaint is not resolved
Ask your bank for a complaint reference number and keep records of your follow-ups. If the matter remains unresolved, use the official complaint escalation channels provided by your bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Avoid anyone who promises to recover your money in exchange for your PIN, password or one-time password.

Final thoughts
Speed matters when you send money to the wrong account. Contact your bank immediately, keep all transaction evidence and follow the official process. Never share your banking password, card PIN or OTP with anyone claiming they can recover your funds.
