A phone slipping into a bucket, sink or puddle can cause panic. Many people immediately press buttons or try to switch it on to see whether it still works. Unfortunately, some common reactions can make the damage worse.
1. Do not keep pressing the buttons. Repeatedly pressing the power or volume buttons may allow moisture to spread or interfere with electrical components. Remove the phone from the water and handle it carefully.
2. Do not charge it immediately
Connecting a wet phone to a charger can cause electrical damage. Do not plug it in until it has been assessed and is completely dry according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
3. Do not use a hair dryer
Hot air can damage delicate components, seals and the screen. Strong airflow may also push moisture further into the device.
4. Do not put it in rice
Rice is a popular home suggestion, but it is not a reliable way to remove moisture from inside a phone. Small particles can enter openings, and the method may delay proper drying or repair.
5. Do not shake it aggressively
Shaking the phone may move water into other parts of the device. Instead, gently wipe the outside with a clean, dry cloth.
What should you do instead?
Switch the phone off if it is safe to do so, disconnect accessories and remove the case. If the manufacturer permits it, remove the SIM tray. Leave the device in a dry, ventilated place and contact a qualified repair professional, especially if it was submerged.
Final thoughts
Some phones have water-resistance ratings, but that does not mean they are waterproof under every condition. Salt water, soapy water and other liquids can be particularly damaging. Acting calmly and avoiding unsafe shortcuts may improve the chance of recovery.
