The liver is one of the body’s most important organs. It helps process nutrients, breaks down harmful substances, produces bile and supports many essential body functions. Liver problems can develop because of viral infections, alcohol-related damage, fatty liver disease, certain medicines and other conditions. Some symptoms may be easy to overlook.
1. Yellowing of the eyes: Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin is called jaundice. It can occur when bilirubin builds up in the body and needs prompt medical investigation.
2. Swelling of the stomach: Some people with advanced liver disease develop fluid accumulation in the abdomen, causing unusual swelling.
3. Dark urine: Urine that becomes unusually dark, particularly alongside pale stools or yellow eyes, can be associated with liver or bile duct problems.
4. Persistent itching: Liver and bile flow problems can sometimes cause widespread itching without an obvious rash.
5. Unusual tiredness: Ongoing fatigue and weakness can occur in people with liver disease, although many other conditions can cause similar symptoms.
6. Easy bruising or bleeding: A damaged liver may struggle to produce certain proteins needed for normal blood clotting. This can make bruising or bleeding more likely.
Final thoughts: Liver disease cannot be diagnosed by looking at your eyes or urine alone. Blood tests, scans and other medical examinations may be necessary. Avoid taking unregulated herbal mixtures or combining medicines without professional advice, because some substances can damage the liver. Yellow eyes, abdominal swelling or unusual bleeding should be assessed promptly.
