Possible Reasons a Man May Experience Frequent Urination at Night

Waking up once in a while to urinate is normal. However, repeatedly getting out of bed several times every night can disturb your sleep and leave you feeling tired the following morning.

Frequent nighttime urination is known medically as nocturia.

1. Drinking too much fluid before bed: Drinking large quantities of water shortly before sleeping may increase the need to urinate overnight.

2. Enlarged prostate: An enlarged prostate can press against the urethra and interfere with normal bladder emptying, particularly in older men.

3. Diabetes: High blood sugar can cause the kidneys to remove more glucose through urine, increasing urination and thirst.

4. Urinary tract infection: An infection may cause frequent urination, burning, discomfort and an urgent need to pass urine.

5. Overactive bladder: This condition causes sudden urges to urinate, sometimes even when the bladder contains relatively little urine.

6. Sleep apnoea: Repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep can contribute to increased nighttime urine production.

7. Certain medicines: Some medications, particularly diuretics, increase urine production. The timing of a prescribed dose may influence nighttime symptoms.

What should you do? Avoid excessive fluid intake immediately before bedtime, but do not deliberately dehydrate yourself. Reduce evening caffeine and arrange a medical check if the problem continues.

Seek urgent medical attention if you cannot urinate, notice blood in your urine or experience fever with severe urinary pain.

Final thoughts: Frequent urination at night is not always caused by prostate enlargement. A proper assessment can identify the underlying reason and help you receive suitable treatment.
