Late singer Mohbad’s family seeks delay in DNA test for Liam

The family of late singer Mohbad is now seeking a delay to the DNA test for the singer’s son, Liam. The family head, Samuel Aloba, in a statement issued on Friday, questioned plans to transport the specimens from Lagos to an unidentified laboratory in the United States.

The singer’s family is asking for clarification on whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre will conduct the analysis or merely send the samples abroad.

His family is also demanding the US laboratory name, address, accreditation, technical capabilities, and details of the experts handling the samples.

In addition, the family requested proper documentation of the collection, labelling, preservation, transportation, and examination of the specimens to prevent possible contamination, substitution, or mishandling.

“The Aloba family respectfully calls for the postponement of the DNA examination scheduled for 31 October, 2026, pending adequate clarification of the outstanding concerns.

For the avoidance of doubt, the family is not presenting the possibility of manipulation as a fact, nor is it asserting that the proposed examination has already been compromised”.

The Ikorodu Magistrates Court has adjourned the case till November 16th and appointed a new officer to address concerns surrounding the testing arrangements.

In an interview with Channels Television, Omowunmi spoke on her broken relationship with her father-in-law, revealing that they used to be best friends.

The mother of one said their relationship has reached a point where the whole issue can’t be settled anymore. She explained that Mohbad’s father wants the DNA result to be negative so he can claim his property.

Earlier this year, a Court had selected three facilities for the DNA tests – two in the UK and one in the US. According to reports, one facility was chosen from Baba Mohbad, another from Wunmi, and the third was selected independently by the court.

Recall that following the singer’s death, in 2023, many had clamoured for a DNA test to be done on Liam, his son to ascertain his paternity. Even Mohbad’s father had called for DNA to be done on his son.

In September, 2025, a Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, ordered a deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test to be carried out on Liam, the son of Mohbad. The singer’s father, through his counsel, argued that clarity on paternity is essential given its implications for the child’s welfare and the mother’s maintenance obligations. Mohbad’s widow, represented by her lawyer, didn’t oppose the application, leading the court to grant the order as requested.

Mohbad’s family had banned his widow from using their family’s surname in public or private records until lawful confirmation of paternity was obtained. They noted that no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo.

Reacting to it, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, described the directive as illegal and sentimental. He accused Aloba’s family of frustrating the DNA process despite multiple court orders.

Wunmi also took legal action to safeguard the late singer’s property, preventing any unauthorised claims to his estate.

In a recorded statement, the singer’s father shed light on why he was demanding a dna on his grandson. He denied that any traditional wedding took place between Mohbad and his wife and claimed that Mohbad had initially promised to formalise the marriage but later withdrew after alleging that Cynthia was unfaithful.
