Urine can tell you something about your hydration and general health. Its colour may change because of the foods you eat, medicines you take or the amount of water you drink. However, some changes may be linked to medical conditions that need attention.
1. Dark yellow urine: Dark yellow urine often means you may need more fluids. However, persistent dark urine can also have other causes.
2. Red or pink urine: Blood in urine can make it look pink or red. Possible causes include UTIs, kidney stones and bladder problems. Some foods and medicines can also change its colour.
3. Brown or tea-coloured urine: Brown urine may occur with severe dehydration, liver problems, blood in the urine or muscle injury. It should be checked if unexplained.
4. Cloudy urine: Cloudy urine can occur with a UTI, crystals or other urinary conditions. It does not confirm an infection by itself.
5. Persistently foamy urine: Foam that appears frequently and does not quickly disappear may sometimes indicate protein in the urine, which can be associated with kidney disease.
6. Orange urine: Some medicines and vitamins can turn urine orange. However, orange urine with yellow eyes or pale stool may point to a liver or bile problem.
Final thoughts: Urine colour alone cannot diagnose a disease. If you notice blood, persistent unusual colour, pain, fever or changes in urination, seek medical assessment. A simple urine test can provide useful information. Do not rely on drinking excessive water to solve every urine colour change.
