Some animals have unusual ways of escaping danger. Instead of running, fighting or hiding, they remain completely still and appear to be dead. This behaviour is known as thanatosis or death-feigning. It can confuse predators and give the animal an opportunity to escape.
1. Opossums: Opossums are famous for playing dead when threatened. They may lie motionless, with their mouths open and bodies appearing lifeless. The behaviour can last for a considerable period.
2. Hognose snakes: Some hognose snakes roll onto their backs, open their mouths and remain still when threatened. Their dramatic performance may discourage a predator.
3. Fire-bellied toads: Some fire-bellied toads use a defensive posture that exposes their brightly coloured undersides. Certain individuals may also remain motionless when threatened.
4. Antlion larvae: Antlion larvae can remain still or bury themselves in sand to avoid predators. Their behaviour helps them stay hidden in their environment.
5. Certain beetles: Some beetles drop to the ground and remain motionless when disturbed. Predators may lose interest in something that appears dead.
6. Certain spiders: Some spiders become completely still when threatened, making it difficult for predators to detect movement.
7. Some caterpillars: Certain caterpillars curl up or remain motionless when touched or threatened. This can make them less noticeable to predators.
Final thoughts: Playing dead is a remarkable survival strategy, but it does not work against every predator. Some animals may still attack motionless prey. These behaviours show that survival in the wild often depends on unusual tricks rather than strength alone.
