Pain in the lower belly is something many people experience, but the cause is not always ordinary stomach upset. Depending on where the pain occurs and what other symptoms accompany it, it may be connected to the urinary system, reproductive organs or digestive system. Some causes are minor, while others need urgent medical attention.
1. Urinary tract infection (UTI): A UTI can cause pain or pressure in the lower abdomen. You may also experience burning when urinating, frequent urination or cloudy urine.
2. Appendicitis: Appendicitis often begins with pain around the belly button before moving towards the lower right side. The pain may become severe and come with nausea, vomiting or fever. This requires urgent hospital care.
3. Menstrual cramps: Women may experience lower abdominal pain before or during their periods. However, unusually severe or worsening cramps should be investigated.
4. Ovarian cysts: An ovarian cyst may cause pelvic pain, bloating or pressure. Sudden severe pain can indicate a complication and needs urgent assessment.
5. Constipation: When stool builds up in the bowel, it can cause cramping, bloating and lower abdominal discomfort.
6. Pelvic inflammatory disease: This infection affects parts of the female reproductive system and may cause lower abdominal pain, unusual discharge, fever or pain during sex.
7. Bowel conditions: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease can cause repeated abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits.
Final thoughts: Lower abdominal pain should not automatically be treated with herbal mixtures or painkillers. Severe sudden pain, fever, repeated vomiting, fainting or possible pregnancy accompanied by pain requires urgent medical attention. A proper examination is the safest way to discover the cause.
