Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital following a health scare on the training ground, though the club has not set a timeline for his return.
The 40-year-old collapsed on Friday afternoon while watching Bayern’s reserve team train at Sabener Strasse.
The situation required emergency medical attention, with a rescue helicopter deployed to the scene. Kompany also suffered a dislocated shoulder during the fall.
Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed on Wednesday that doctors identified the cause as meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
Local reports note Kompany had been battling a severe viral infection the previous week.
Despite missing his pre-match media duties before the Champions League fixture against Arsenal, he insisted on coaching from the touchline in heavy rain, which analysts suggest may have compromised his immune system.
The recovery
The club announced Kompany is recovering well at home, but management is prioritising his long-term health. His rehabilitation will take weeks rather than days.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will remain in temporary charge, having already guided Bayern to wins over Freiburg and Magdeburg.
Journalists report Kompany will miss Saturday’s Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund, plus subsequent matches against Atletico Madrid and Mainz.
The earliest realistic target for his return is Friday, November 20, against FC Koln after the international break.
