Cloves are commonly used in Nigerian cooking and are also known for their strong aroma. Some people chew cloves because they believe the spice can freshen the mouth. But can cloves really help with bad breath, and are there things you should know before trying this home practice?
1. Cloves have a strong natural aroma
The smell of cloves can temporarily cover unpleasant breath. This may make the mouth feel fresher for a short time, but covering an odour is not the same as treating its cause.
2. They contain eugenol
Cloves contain a natural compound called eugenol. It has been studied for its properties in laboratory and dental settings. However, this does not mean chewing cloves can cure gum disease or eliminate every cause of bad breath.
3. They do not replace brushing
Food particles and bacteria can collect on the teeth and tongue. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth and gently cleaning the tongue remain important.
4. Gum problems may be responsible
Bad breath can be linked to gum disease, tooth decay and dental infections. If the smell continues despite good oral hygiene, a dental examination may help identify the problem.
5. Too much clove oil can be harmful
Concentrated clove oil is not the same as using a small amount of the whole spice. Swallowing large amounts of clove oil can be dangerous, and applying it directly to the mouth may irritate or damage tissues.
6. Dry mouth can contribute
Saliva helps keep the mouth clean. Drinking water regularly and addressing causes of dry mouth may help improve breath.
Final thoughts
Cloves may provide a temporary fresh aroma, but they are not a substitute for proper dental care. If bad breath persists, visit a dentist to find out what is causing it rather than relying only on spices or mouth fresheners.
