Mosquitoes are more than an annoying problem during the evening. Some mosquitoes spread diseases such as malaria, which remains an important public health concern in Nigeria. Reducing places where mosquitoes breed can help protect your household.
1. Empty containers holding stagnant water
Old buckets, tins, tyres and discarded plastic containers can collect rainwater. Empty them regularly because mosquitoes can lay eggs in standing water.
2. Cover water storage containers
Keep water tanks, drums and buckets properly covered. This helps prevent mosquitoes from accessing water where they can breed.
3. Clear blocked gutters
Leaves, dirt and rubbish can block gutters and create pools of standing water. Clean them regularly, especially during the rainy season.
4. Use insecticide-treated mosquito nets
Sleeping under an appropriate insecticide-treated net can reduce mosquito bites, particularly at night when malaria-carrying mosquitoes commonly bite.
5. Fit screens where possible
Window and door screens can help prevent mosquitoes from entering rooms. Repair holes and gaps that allow insects inside.
6. Use approved mosquito repellents
Use registered repellents according to their instructions. Do not apply household insecticides directly to the skin unless the product is specifically designed for that purpose.
7. Keep your surroundings clean
Dispose of rubbish properly and remove unnecessary items that can collect water. Community clean-up efforts are also important because mosquitoes can breed outside your own compound.
Final thoughts
Mosquito control requires consistent effort. Remember that malaria symptoms may include fever, chills, headache and body weakness. Anyone with suspected malaria should seek testing and appropriate treatment rather than relying only on home remedies.
