Sweating is a normal way for the body to regulate its temperature. However, some people sweat heavily even when they are sitting in a cool room or doing very little physical activity. If this happens frequently, it may be worth investigating.
1. Anxiety and emotional stress
Strong emotions can activate the body’s stress response. This may cause sweating around the palms, face, armpits and other areas.
2. Overactive sweat glands
Some people have a condition called hyperhidrosis, which causes excessive sweating even when the body does not need to cool down. It can affect the hands, feet, face or armpits.
3. Certain medications
Some medicines may cause increased sweating as a side effect. If you notice unusual sweating after starting a new medicine, discuss it with your healthcare professional.
4. Hormonal changes
Hormonal changes during menopause, pregnancy or certain medical conditions can cause episodes of sweating. Hot flashes may occur even in a cool environment.
5. Low blood sugar
People with diabetes who use certain medicines may experience low blood sugar. Sweating, shaking, hunger and confusion can be warning signs. Severe confusion or unconsciousness requires emergency help.
6. Infections and other illnesses
Some infections can cause sweating, particularly when accompanied by fever. Repeated night sweats or unexplained sweating with weight loss should be medically assessed.
Final thoughts
Notice when the sweating occurs, how long it lasts and whether other symptoms appear. If it is persistent, disruptive or unexplained, arrange a medical assessment. Do not assume that excessive sweating is simply a sign of weakness or poor hygiene.
