7 Early Signs of Stroke You Should Never Ignore

Stroke is one of the medical emergencies people should take seriously. It happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. When this happens, brain cells can begin to suffer damage within minutes.

In Nigeria, where high blood pressure is a common health concern, knowing the warning signs of stroke is especially important. A person may suddenly become weak, struggle to speak or develop problems with balance. Recognising these changes early can make a difference.

1. Sudden Weakness on One Side of the Body

A person may suddenly lose strength in one arm or leg, or notice that one side of the face is drooping. Ask the person to smile or raise both arms and look for an obvious difference.

2. Difficulty Speaking

Speech may suddenly become slurred, or the person may struggle to understand simple words. Do not assume the person is merely tired or confused.

3. Sudden Vision Problems

Blurred vision, double vision or sudden loss of sight can sometimes occur during a stroke.

4. Loss of Balance

Some people suddenly become dizzy, unsteady or unable to walk properly.

5. A Severe, Sudden Headache

An unusually severe headache, particularly with vomiting or confusion, can be a warning sign of bleeding in the brain.

6. Sudden Confusion

The person may have difficulty understanding questions, following instructions or responding normally.

7. Difficulty Walking

Sudden stumbling, poor coordination or inability to stand normally should not be ignored.

Final Thoughts

Remember FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to seek emergency help. If these symptoms appear, call for emergency medical assistance immediately and note the time they started. Do not wait to see whether the person improves, and do not give food, drink or medication to someone who may have difficulty swallowing. Even if the symptoms disappear, urgent assessment is still necessary.
