Islamic singer Aminat Obirere draws backlash online following her performance at Odun Ifa festival

Islamic singer Aminat Obirere has sparked criticism on social media following her performance at the 2026 Odun Ifa Festival in Ogun State. The singer was among the entertainers who performed at the event, which celebrated Yoruba heritage, traditional practices and the spiritual significance of Ifa culture.

A video circulating on social media showed Obirere wearing a flowing robe as she performed one of her popular songs before attendees at the festival.

However, her appearance at the event has drawn criticism from some Nigerians, particularly within sections of the Muslim community, with questions raised about her participation in a festival associated with traditional Yoruba religious practices.

Reacting to the development, a social media critic questioned the position of Muslims who condemn music but appear to have a different reaction when an Islamic singer performs at an event associated with Ifa tradition.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to discussions about religious identity, music and the participation of entertainers in cultural events linked to traditional beliefs.

The 2026 Odun Ifa Festival was organised by the families of High Chief Ayoola Adeyiolaifa, the Oluna of Omode Egbaland. The event took place at Olunla Villa, Balogun Quarters, Owode Egba, Ogun State.

According to the organisers, the festival was an opportunity for attendees to experience the richness of Yoruba heritage, traditional practices and the spiritual essence of the culture.
