Your legs can sometimes reveal signs that something is affecting your blood circulation. Changes such as unusual swelling, skin colour changes or persistent pain should not be ignored. These symptoms do not automatically mean you have a serious disease, but they deserve attention when they persist.
1. Swelling around your ankles
Swelling can happen after standing or sitting for a long time. However, repeated swelling may be associated with vein problems, heart conditions, kidney disease or other medical issues.
2. Pain when walking
Pain or cramping in the calf muscles that repeatedly appears during walking and improves with rest may be a sign of peripheral artery disease. This happens when blood flow to the legs is reduced.
3. Unusually cold feet
Feet that frequently feel colder than the rest of the body may sometimes indicate reduced blood flow. However, cold feet can also have other explanations.
4. Changes in skin colour
Poor circulation can sometimes cause the skin around the legs or feet to look unusually pale, bluish or darker. New or unexplained colour changes should be examined.
5. Wounds that refuse to heal
A small wound on the foot or lower leg that takes unusually long to heal may be connected to poor circulation, diabetes or infection.
6. Numbness or tingling
Reduced blood flow or nerve problems can cause numbness, tingling or unusual sensations in the legs and feet.
Final thoughts
Do not ignore persistent changes in your legs. A suddenly painful, swollen or warm leg needs urgent medical assessment because it may indicate a blood clot. Sudden severe pain, a cold pale limb or loss of movement is also an emergency.
