‘Shot in Nigeria, lost a kidney, now on disability benefits in Canada’: Comedian Oloba Salo’s story

Nigerian TikTok personality Oloba Salo, whose real name is Afeez Ojesanmi, has sparked conversations online following reports that he now receives disability benefits in Canada after surviving a gun attack in Lagos that reportedly left him with serious injuries and one kidney.

Salo’s life reportedly took a dramatic turn in October 2024 when news of his shooting in the Lekki area of Lagos State surfaced online.

According to reports at the time, the social media personality was attacked by armed men who reportedly shot him and made away with his gold chain.

His friend, Tunde Perry, was among the first people to raise the alarm, disclosing that Salo had been rushed to Perez Medcare Hospital in Lekki Phase 2 for medical attention.

The Lagos State Police Command subsequently confirmed the shooting, while videos and updates about the entertainer’s condition began circulating across social media.

However, what initially appeared to be a robbery incident reportedly developed into a serious medical challenge for the content creator, who struggled with his movement following the attack.

In December 2024, Salo appeared during a TikTok Live session to recount what allegedly happened on the day he was shot.

According to his account, he had stopped to buy a drink while travelling to meet someone who had promised to give him ₦1 million.

He claimed that some men approached him, called him by his real name and demanded that he surrender his gold chain.

Salo further alleged that a warning shot was fired before he was eventually shot three times.

He also suggested that the attackers knew his identity, raising questions about whether the incident was an ordinary robbery.

The controversy surrounding the shooting took another turn in January 2025 when Salo publicly accused Nigerian singer Naira Marley and some of his associates of having a connection to the attack.

He claimed to have evidence supporting his allegation. However, the accusation has not been independently established, and no confirmed finding has linked the musician to the shooting.

While discussions about the circumstances surrounding the attack continued, Salo was focused on recovering from his injuries.

In February 2025, he reportedly described himself as paralysed during a TikTok Live session, as concerns about his ability to walk normally continued to generate reactions online.

Subsequent videos showed him making progress with his movement, although his recovery remained a subject of public interest.

Following the incident and concerns about his safety, Salo reportedly relocated to Toronto, Canada.

However, his reported living condition in the North American country has recently attracted attention after he allegedly disclosed that he now lives with one kidney.

In a recent conversation with a friend, the TikTok personality reportedly revealed that he receives disability benefits in Toronto because of his health condition.

The disclosure has generated conversations about his life after the shooting, particularly how the incident has affected his health, finances and ability to work as he previously did.

Interestingly, Canada has social-support programmes designed to assist eligible residents living with disabilities.

One of them is the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), which provides financial assistance to eligible Ontario residents with substantial disabilities who meet the programme’s requirements.

The support helps beneficiaries with basic living expenses and certain disability-related needs.

Canada also introduced the federal Canada Disability Benefit to provide additional financial support to eligible low-income persons with disabilities aged 18 to 64.

However, receiving either benefit is subject to specific eligibility requirements, and Salo’s reported enrolment has not been independently verified.

His story has once again drawn attention to the long-term consequences of violent attacks, as the entertainer continues to navigate life after the October 2024 shooting.
