A blocked nose can make it difficult to sleep, breathe comfortably or concentrate during the day. It may happen because of a common cold, allergies, dust or irritation inside the nose. Although some cases require medical attention, a few simple home remedies may provide temporary relief.
1. Drink enough water
Drinking water regularly helps keep your body hydrated. Warm water, soup and other non-alcoholic fluids may also help loosen thick mucus, making it easier to clear your nose.
2. Try saline nasal drops
Saline drops contain salt water and can help moisturise the nasal passages. They may loosen mucus and wash away some irritants. Use a properly prepared sterile saline product rather than homemade mixtures of uncertain concentration.
3. Take a warm shower
The moisture from a warm shower may temporarily make breathing feel easier. Avoid water that is excessively hot, especially if you are bathing children.
4. Sleep with your head slightly raised
Using an extra pillow may reduce the feeling of nasal blockage when lying down. This can make it easier to rest at night.
5. Keep your room free from dust
Dust, smoke and strong perfumes can irritate the nose. Regularly cleaning your sleeping area and avoiding cigarette smoke may help.
6. Try warm soup
Warm soup can be soothing when you have a cold. It also provides fluid, which helps prevent dehydration.
7. Use a clean humidifier
If the air around you is very dry, a clean humidifier may help add moisture. It must be cleaned regularly to prevent mould and germs.
Final thoughts
These remedies may offer temporary comfort, but they do not cure every cause of nasal blockage. Seek medical advice if the blockage lasts a long time, comes with severe facial pain, high fever or difficulty breathing.
