6 Things You Should Never Do After a Snakebite

A snakebite can cause panic, especially in rural communities, farms, bush paths, and areas where people work outdoors. In the confusion, bystanders may try traditional remedies or methods they have seen in films. Unfortunately, some of these actions can make the injury worse. Knowing the correct first steps can help save a life.

1. Do not cut the wound
Cutting the bite area to remove venom does not work and can cause bleeding, infection, and additional tissue damage. Venom may spread beyond the bite site before anyone attempts this method.

2. Do not suck out the venom
Sucking the wound with the mouth or using a suction device does not reliably remove venom. It can waste valuable time and cause further injury. Get the person to medical care instead.

3. Do not tie a tight rope around the limb
A tight tourniquet can restrict blood circulation and damage tissue. Do not tightly tie the arm or leg with rope, cloth, or a belt. Keep the bitten limb as still as possible and follow emergency medical instructions.

4. Do not make the person run or walk unnecessarily
Movement can increase the spread of some venoms through the body. Help the person remain calm and still. If possible, carry them to transport rather than asking them to walk a long distance.

5. Do not apply chemicals or unverified herbal mixtures
Do not put petrol, acid, herbs, or other substances on the wound. These treatments cannot neutralise venom and may cause burns or delay proper treatment. Antivenom, when appropriate, must be given by trained medical professionals.

6. Do not wait for severe symptoms
Some snakebites may initially cause little pain or swelling, but serious effects can develop later. Arrange urgent transport to a hospital or health facility equipped to assess snakebite. If safe, note the snake’s appearance from a distance, but never try to catch or kill it.

Final thoughts
Keep the person calm, remove rings or tight items near the affected limb before swelling begins, and immobilise the limb without tightly binding it. Seek medical help immediately. Proper treatment can make a major difference, so avoid home remedies that waste time or worsen the injury.
