A scorpion sting can cause sudden pain, burning, tingling or swelling around the affected area. In many cases, symptoms remain local, but some scorpion species can cause more serious reactions. Children may be at greater risk of severe effects.
In Nigeria, a person may encounter a scorpion while moving firewood, clearing a compound, working outdoors or putting on shoes that have been left on the floor. Knowing what to do can help prevent further injury while arranging medical advice.
The severity of a sting depends on the species, the amount of venom injected and the person’s age and health. It is not always possible to judge the danger from the size of the scorpion alone.
1. Move Away From the Scorpion
Make sure the person is no longer at risk of being stung again. Do not pick up the scorpion with bare hands.
2. Wash the Area
Gently clean the sting site with soap and water. Avoid applying fuel, chemicals, herbal mixtures or other irritating substances.
3. Apply a Cool Compress
Place a cool pack wrapped in cloth over the affected area for short periods to help ease pain and swelling. Do not put ice directly on the skin.
4. Keep the Affected Part Resting
Avoid unnecessary movement of the affected limb and remove tight jewellery if swelling begins.
5. Seek Medical Advice
Contact a healthcare professional or poison advice service if one is available. Seek urgent medical attention for a child who has been stung, a sting from a suspected dangerous species, or symptoms that are spreading or getting worse.
6. Watch for Severe Symptoms
Difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, unusual eye movements, muscle twitching, excessive sweating, drooling or difficulty swallowing require emergency care.
Final Thoughts
Do not cut the sting, suck out venom, apply a tight tourniquet or try to burn the affected area. These methods can cause additional harm. If it is safe, remember what the scorpion looked like, but do not attempt to catch it. When symptoms are severe or the person is a child, do not rely on home treatment. Get medical help promptly.
